Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Kaja Kallas stresses EU support for Ukraine, highlighting challenges, global threats, and the need for military preparedness.
The European Union’s designated foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas expressed that the bloc must back Ukraine “for as long as it takes”, as she faced scrutiny by the EU Parliament. She is set to face scrutiny from MEPs in Brussels during the final day of a week-long confirmation hearings process.

“The situation on the battlefield is difficult. And that’s why we must keep working every day,” Kallas pointed to EU lawmakers. “Today, tomorrow and for as long as it takes and with as much military, financial and humanitarian help as needed.” She said: “The victory of Ukraine is very significant for us, the EU is united in calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East and the unconditional release of all (taken by “Hamas”) hostages, for a two-state solution.”
Kalls stated that “the EU for me is above all freedom.” Callas added that the next five years will not be comfortable and noted the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, the advancement of authoritarian regimes around the world, as well as the drive of Russia, China, North Korea and Iran to alter the international order. “We must be aware of the threats and respond appropriately,” she insisted.
Regarding China, she stated that it is necessary to crush the trade imbalance and work with Beijing to cut aid to Moscow in the war in Ukraine. “We cannot accept that China, Russia, Iran and North Korea produce more ammunition than us”, Kalas pressed and called for increasing the capabilities of the European military-industrial complex.
