MEPs have “strongly condemned” the “unprecedented” missile and drone attacks by the Houthis against Saudi Arabia, and their military offensive in Yemen.
In a resolution adopted in Strasbourg on Thursday, MEPs describe these attacks as “flagrant violations of international law and international humanitarian law.”
They said that large numbers of Yemeni civilians have been killed and displaced, while the humanitarian crisis in the country has worsened.
The Parliament also denounces the missile and drone attacks by the Houthis against Israel and the United Arab Emirates in recent years.
MEPs said they wanted to express solidarity with the government of Saudi Arabia and support for Yemen’s “legitimate government.”
The resolution reaffirms its commitment to the security, sovereignty and territorial integrity of both countries.
MEPs said that they will demand that the Houthis immediately cease all hostilities, both inside and outside Yemen “and abandon any territorial ambitions.”
The resolution said, “Parliament strongly condemns the destabilising role of the Iranian regime, which poses a major threat to the security and stability of the wider region and provides the Houthis with weapons, missile and drone technology, training, and financing.”
Following a proposal by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, Parliament urges the Council to put the Houthi movement on the EU list of terrorist organisations.
It also calls for all channels of financing for the Houthi movement to be dismantled and for the EU to “freeze all funds and economic resources belonging to the Houthis and their facilitators.”
ECR Shadow Rapporteur Jacek Ozdoba welcomed the broad political support for a common response.
Ozdoba said: “I am very pleased that, thanks to my initiative, we are now adopting this crucial resolution. It goes to show that, setting aside our differences, we are capable of grasping a vital issue—a point also reflected in the resolution itself.”
“It has been clearly stated throughout this debate that the Houthis are terrorists. We cannot accept attacks on Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, or the United Arab Emirates—our friends—by terrorists who are bombing and assaulting the innocent inhabitants of the Arabian Peninsula,” said the MEP.
