Madrid (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Foreign Minister of Spain, Jose Manuel Albares stated that European leaders will debate in Paris on how to prevent peace talks on Ukraine ending up rewarding Russian aggression.

In an interview with radio station Onda Cero, he said,

“A war of aggression cannot be rewarded, we cannot encourage others to launch wars of aggression.”

“Today I’m convinced Putin will keep attacking and bombing Ukraine. So I do not see peace on the horizon at the moment,”

He also said.

Spanish Foreign Minister talked ahead of an emergency summit of European leaders, including UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer, convened by French President Emmanuel Macron on the Ukraine fighting. The summit was called after U.S. officials indicated Europe would have no part in any discussions on finishing the conflict.

How is Trump’s approach to Ukraine alarming EU leaders?

U.S. President Donald Trump shocked European NATO partners and Ukraine last week when he revealed he had had a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin without conferring with them and would create a peace process. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reached Saudi Arabia ahead of expected discussions with Russian officials seeking to end Moscow’s nearly three-year war in Ukraine.

Trump’s Ukraine representative Keith Kellogg shook Europe further when he stated it would not have a chair at the table for Ukraine peace discussions, even after the US sent a questionnaire to European governments to question what they could assist in security guarantees for Kyiv.

The U.S. has also asked European partners in NATO what they would require from the US to participate in Ukraine security arrangements, according to a document.

According to experts, dozens of similar meetings have shown the EU to be dithering, divided working to come up with a cohesive strategy to end the Ukraine fighting on its doorstep and negotiating with Russia, three years into Moscow’s attack on its neighbour.
