Ankara (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A Turkish foreign ministry source said that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will visit Turkey on February 24, 2025, to examine his country’s recent discussions with U.S. officials on concluding the fighting in Ukraine and how Turkey can assist in the process, Reuters reported.

The foreign ministry source further said that Turkey

is ready to assume this role in the upcoming period.

The source also said that Lavrov and his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan would also talk about the ceasefire in Gaza and the circumstances in Syria. It further stated Turkey will stress the need for Syrian territorial unity and the removal of terrorists.

The Turkish source stated the two sides would discuss steps toward “a just and lasting peace through diplomatic efforts, recent contacts between the U.S. and Russia and the contributions that Turkey can make to the process”.

What is Turkey’s role in the Ukraine war?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has recently paid a visit to Turkey. Apart from this, the other key issues were the establishment of bilateral relations, economic and agricultural issues, and society cooperation.

In the words of Zelenskyy, the degree of cooperation between Ukraine and Türkiye is constantly increasing. In special, two documents were signed in the presence of the Presidents: the Memorandum of Cooperation in Media and Communications and the Agreement on Cooperation in Education.

He highlighted this during Zelenskyy’s visit to Ankara. Erdogan said that Turkey would do its best to assist in concluding the negotiation process with lasting stability. He also put his nation forward as an “ideal host for possible discussions between Russia, Ukraine, and the USA,” claiming that Turkey is witnessed as a “reliable mediator” by both sides.
