Moscow (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Russia announced on Sunday that it had struck military targets during a large overnight attack on Ukraine, with Kyiv reporting four civilians killed and many more wounded.

“Tonight, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation launched a massive strike … against Ukrainian military-industrial complex enterprises,”

Moscow’s Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

According to reports, on Sunday, Russian attacks using “hundreds” of drones and missiles resulted in the deaths of at least four people, including a 12-year-old girl, and injured at least 10 others in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Poland deployed fighter jets to secure its airspace.

How did Zelensky describe the scale of russian strikes?

Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, stated that Russia carried out a ‘vile’ attack on Saturday night, launching approximately 500 drones and 40 missiles.

What civilian infrastructure was damaged during overnight bombardments?

Zelensky stated that the primary targets were Kyiv, as well as the Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, and Odesa regions. Zelenskyy mentioned that “civilian infrastructure facilities,” a rubber factory, and apartment buildings were all damaged during the “brutal strikes” observed in the Russian attack.

An air raid alert was issued in the Kyiv region, with the local military administration indicating that Russia was conducting drone and missile attacks.

“Russia launched another massive air attack on Ukrainian cities while people were sleeping,” Ukraine’s foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, “Again, hundreds of drones and missiles, destroying residential buildings and causing civilian casualties.”

Why did Poland scramble fighter jets after Russian strikes?

The attack also initiated military responses in neighbouring Poland, with fighter jets scrambled early Sunday morning as Russia targeted sites in western Ukraine, according to the Polish armed forces.

Poland’s military announced it scrambled fighter jets into its airspace and activated ground-based air defence systems on high alert following the Russian strikes in Ukraine. The military stated that the moves were defensive, intended to safeguard Polish airspace and protect citizens, particularly in regions near Ukraine.
