Rome (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The G7 reaffirms support for Ukraine on its 1000th war day, pledging sanctions on Russia and backing Ukraine’s sovereignty.

At the initiative of the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, the G7 Leaders have assumed a statement in support of Kyiv as the thousandth day of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine approaches. Heads of the Group of Seven (G7) major democracies restated a pledge to keep levying severe costs on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, through sanctions, export controls and other actions, and promised to support Kyiv for as long as it takes.

How are the G7 nations addressing the Russo-Ukraine crisis?

“Russia remains the sole obstacle to just and lasting peace,” expressed a joint statement published on 16 Nov 2024, adopted “in support of Kyiv as the thousandth day of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine approaches.”

Moreover, they said: “After 1,000 days of war, we recognize the immense suffering endured by the people of Ukraine. Despite these hardships, Ukrainians have demonstrated unmatched resilience and determination in defending their land, culture, and people.”

Italy carries the 2024 rotating presidency of the G7, which also includes the United States, Canada, Japan, France, Germany and Britain. The G7, which also comprises Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the United States, confirmed “its commitment to imposing severe expenditures on Russia through sanctions, export controls and other effective measures”.

It voiced “unwavering support for Ukraine for as long as it takes”, adding: “We stand in solidarity contributing to its fight for sovereignty, freedom, independence, territorial integrity and its reconstruction. We recognise, too, the impact of Russia’s aggression on vulnerable people across the world.”
