Yesterday, on 9 January, photos on Instagram showed a fox wandering through the Diamant pre-metro station in Schaarbeek. The animal was seen running across the tram tracks while amazed passengers. Passengers mentioned that it’s unusual to see wildlife in busy urban areas, especially in a transit station. The video gained a lot of attention online, with many people commenting on how rare it is to spot animals in such places.
Is this the same fox spotted at the Diamant and Georges Henri stations?
Around the same time, another video popped up on TikTok showing a fox walking across a platform in a different pre-metro station. Although the exact location isn’t clear, it could be Georges Henri station in Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe, which is close to Diamant. In the footage, the fox strolls casually while passengers wait for their tram.
Authorities mentioned that this may be the same fox seen earlier since the stations are nearby, but there’s no solid proof linking the two sightings. Together, these videos have intrigued social media users and sparked curiosity about the fox in the city.
MIVB encounters with urban foxes in Brussels public transport
MIVB spokesperson Laurent Vermeersch mentioned that there haven’t been any new reports of the fox since the videos went viral. This isn’t the first time a fox has been seen in or near Brussels‘ public transport.
A few weeks ago, a tram driver spotted a fox in the same tunnel as the recent sightings, indicating that wildlife sometimes enters the underground system. Although these sightings are rare, they highlight that urban areas can still have unexpected animal visitors, even in busy transit locations.
Vermeersch noted that there have been previous fox sightings related to MIVB operations. He recalled one near the Delta metro station, where the fox stayed off the tracks. In a more unusual case from 2018, a fox entered a tram at the Uccle depot.
Vermeersch mentioned that the fox hasn’t caused any issues on tram lines 7 and 25 near Diamant. He added that if a fox is still in the tunnel, they would stop service and search for it to prevent accidents, and drivers would be warned to be extra cautious in that area.
