Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper): Lawmakers slammed the Europe for sending diplomat Enrique Mora to Iran’s presidential inauguration. The main opposition say it is tantamount to recognition of a regime that has been accused of gross human rights abuses and sponsoring terrorism charges President Bashir denies. Critics also note the lack of continuity between Trump’s tough line with EU on Russia and his relationship to Iran missiles.

Despite opposition from six top European Parliament officials a senior commission from Tehran issued a mandate for the EU to send a diplomat to Iran’s event..

Why Did the EU Send a Diplomat to Iran’s event?

Many claim Iran supports Russia in Ukraine abuses its own people uses EU citizens as political prisoners supports terrorists and builds nuclear weapons against UN rules. Bart Groothuis a Dutch lawmaker said that European countries didn’t go to Putin’s ceremony but went to Iran’s.  Rihards Kols a Latvian member of the right-wing European Conservatives and Reformists thinks Mora makes things worse by supporting a government that hurts its people helps terrorists and causes problems around the world. Kols posted a video from the event where Iranian lawmakers shouted Death to America and Israel and called it shameful.

It has been reported that Hannah Neumann a Green MEP who doesn’t like the Iranian government told Mora he should know when to go to an event and when not to. She criticized him for being in a photo with Ismail Haniyeh the head of Hamas a group the EU calls terrorists. It has been said that Peter Stano who speaks for the EU about foreign affairs said that Mora went to Tehran for the inauguration to talk to the new Iranian leaders about all the issues the EU is worried about. Our relationship with Iran is really bad because they violate human rights support Russia’s wrong actions in Ukraine and keep EU citizens in jail for no reason. Mora met Abbas Araghchi in Tehran and shared a photo on social media. It has been reported that he said it was nice to reconnect with Araghchi in Iran’s new phase and is excited to work with him again.
