Berlin (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – European Union’s top military official, Robert Brieger, stated in an interview with Germany’s Welt am Sonntag that it would be logical to station European Union soldiers in Greenland amid Trump’s expressed interest in taking over the Danish territory.
The chairman of the European Union Military Committee, Robert Brieger, said:
“In my view, it would make perfect sense not only to station U.S. forces in Greenland, as has been the case to date, but also to consider stationing EU soldiers there in the future.”
Brieger further said, Ultimately, such a measure would require a political conclusion.
“However, with increasing ice melt as a result of climate change, this also creates a certain potential for tension with Russia and possibly China,”
He stated. Brieger stated he hoped that the U.S., as a member of the United Nations, would respect the inviolability of borders as defined in the U.N. Charter.
How does Trump justify his interest in Greenland?
U.S. President Donald Trump has said that having control of Greenland is crucial for U.S. international security after his re-election. According to him, military pressure and economic sanctions are still on the table as an option for forcing Denmark to give up control of the territory because it sits at a strategic intersection point between North America and Europe.
Trump has stated he needs to secure Greenland in the interest of the country’s national security.
“Greenland is a wonderful place,”
He said.
“We need it for international security,”
So the United States should wrest Greenland from Denmark’s control as soon as possible.
In his remarks, Trump did not rule out economic sanctions or the use of military force to assert U.S. dominance over Greenland, which has been raising alarms among its European allies as well as in the local population of Greenlanders. He did say that he believed the people of Greenland would want U.S. governance rather than Danish rule.
