Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Tram 51 won’t run between Belgica–Marguerite Duras from Aug 5, 2025, until Apr 2026 for Sainctelette Squareworks in Brussels. Metro 6 offers a detour; bus 14 stops shift. Project ends in summer 2027.

As VRT News reported, from Tuesday, August 5, 2025, tram 51 will stop running between Belgica and Marguerite Duras due to major road and track works at Sainctelette Square in Brussels. The line will stay closed on this part until April 2026. During this period, tram 51 will run in 2 parts. It will still move on the section north of Belgica and the part south of Marguerite Duras.

According to officials, the work at Sainctelette is part of a large plan to rebuild the square and improve the area. The tram tracks will be taken out and fully replaced. Because of how much needs to be done, the break in service will last close to 2 years.

How will Sainctelette work affect tram 51 and bus 14 travel?

According to officials, to help people travel while tram 51 is not running, other routes have been set up. The easiest way is to take metro line 6from Belgica to Simonis, change there to line 2 or 6, and ride to Yser. From Yser, it is only a short walk to the Marguerite Duras stop. They mentioned that anyone who does not want to walk can stay on Metro 6 to Zuidstation/Gare du Midi. They can get back on tram 51 and keep going north.

Bus 14 to UZ-VUB will not stop at the usual Vanderstichelen and Belgica stops during the work at Place Sainctelette. The stops will move to the side lane so people can still catch the bus. Work to rebuild Place Sainctelette began in April 2024 and will continue until the summer of 2027. The project will completely change the square and how people use it.

The plan will link the canal banks again with a new “bridge square” that gives more space to walkers, cyclists, and public transport. Car lanes will be moved and made smaller, and there will be wide walking areas and a safe bike path.
