Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper): Brussels is offering a €300 discount to young people aged 16-18 for buying bikes and safety gear. Alderman Bart Dhondt emphasizes this initiative aims to boost cycling among youth, requiring a 2-hour training course on traffic rules to qualify.

The city is encouraging young people aged 16 to 18 to ride bikes more by offering a discount of up to 300 euros. This financial incentive can be used to buy a city bike or important safety equipment like helmets, fluorescent vests, and bike lights.

How is Brussels encouraging youth cycling with €300 discounts and training?

The city is targeting young people aged 16 to 18 because they are often difficult to motivate to ride bikes regularly. By offering discounts, the city wants to make biking more appealing and accessible, promoting it as a mode of transport while improving road safety. This initiative is part of a larger effort to encourage sustainable urban mobility and ensure safer conditions for young cyclists.

“Having more young people ride bikes is the future for Brussels,” says Alderman for Mobility Bart Dhondt (Groen). The city has been working on this for six years, creating safe bike paths and quieter streets to encourage cycling. However, to receive a bonus, young cyclists must first complete a 2-hour course with the Brussels police. This course covers traffic rules and teaches cycling techniques.participants ride around the city to practice and learn about the potential dangers of biking in an urban environment.

It has been said that a new training program is helping young people like Mohamed Stito afford one. The program teaches important cycling skills and traffic rules, and participants can earn a bonus to help buy their bikes. Mohamed is excited to follow the training because he wants to cycle but doesn’t have the money for a bicycle. He feels happy that he can learn and receive support to get a bicycle. This initiative aims to encourage more youth to ride bikes in Brussels.
