Ninove (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): A worker at a Ninove care center was fired for sharing a photo of a resident without consent highlighting the importance of protecting privacy and dignity in care settings.
At a care center in Ninove a worker took a picture of a resident who was Guy D’Haeseleer’s father the leader of the Forza Ninove party. The worker then sent this photo to someone they knew. This caused big privacy worries because it involved a vulnerable person in a care setting. It has been said that this situation shows big problems with keeping personal and private information safe in care homes. When privacy is violated like this it not only hurts the dignity of the people affected but also makes it hard to trust the places supposed to look after them.
What actions were taken after the privacy breach at Ninove Care Center?
When Guy D’Haeseleer found out about the photo issue he made a formal complaint. The care center then started a process to deal with the staff member. They did this to fix the privacy problem and hold the person accountable for using the information wrongly. Alderman Veerle Cosyns from the Samen party said that what happened was a big breach of the resident’s privacy and the trust we expect in care places. She stressed that these kinds of actions hurt the trust and respect needed to give proper care. Taking disciplinary action is important to deal with and stop this kind of behavior.
At the meeting about what happened the worker showed her phone. Alderman Veerle Cosyns said they checked and saw that the photo was sent to just one person. The person who got the photo wasn’t part of the family or helping with the resident’s care. The worker not only did something wrong by sending the photo without permission but also shared private information with someone who shouldn’t have had it.
The worker was fired from the care center because of the privacy problem was bad. Alderman Veerle Cosyns said they did this on purpose to show how important it is to respect the privacy and dignity of the residents. Cosyns made it clear that every resident should feel confident that their information is treated with respect. Because the breach was so serious they thought firing the staff member was the right punishment to keep up these important rules and stop any more problems in the future.
