Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict in Karabakh on geographic map

Belgium (Brussels Morning Newspaper) What is happening in these hours in Nagorno-Karabakh, with massive bombings by Azerbaijan on targets in Armenian territory, leaves us horrified, but unfortunately not surprised.

For months, in fact, I have been denouncing the criminal blockade of the Lachin corridor with which the Baku regime has prevented access to food, medicines, and basic necessities in Nagorno Karabakh, putting the lives of over 120 thousand people at serious risk Armenian ethnic group residing in the region. With today’s attack, the risks of witnessing a real ethnic cleansing in the region increase, and hour by hour the danger of a further escalation of the conflict increases which could also see Azeri offensive actions in southern Armenia, the Zangesur.

To try to prevent this situation, over the months I have launched various initiatives, among which the most recent is a Letter sent to the President of the European Commission, the President of the European Council, and the High Representative with which, also thanks to the support of 51 fellow MEPs from various political groups, we asked for the imposition of a harsh sanctions regime against Baku with the aim of preventing what is happening in these hours. Perhaps, if our requests had been accepted in a timely manner, this tragic situation could have been avoided.

The European Union cannot remain helpless, and it is necessary that decisive and targeted actions be taken as soon as possible, also in light of the actions of Russia, which was informed by Baku about the imminence of the attack and, for the yet again, he decided to stab the Armenians in the back, sacrificed on the altar of political-commercial relations with Baku and Ankara.
