Hasselt (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): The Virga Jessefeesten in Hasselt a 7-yearly cultural celebration features a newly designed outfit for the Virga Jesse statue by fashion designer Jordy Arthur Vaesen blending tradition and modernity.

The Virga Jesse festivities in Hasselt happen every seven years and are an important cultural event. It has been said that this year there will be a special update to the main figure Maria called the Virga Jesse. Fashion designer Jordy Arthur Vaesen has given her a new  modern look while keeping the traditional style. Vaesen’s new design mixes modern fashion with traditional symbols creating a fresh but respectful look for the important figure. The new outfit is expected to be bright and elegant showing both its historical importance and today’s style trends. The festivities are a big event for the city, featuring religious processions, cultural activities, and community events. They mention that this year’s new look for Maria makes the celebrations even more exciting, attracting interest from both locals and visitors.

How is fashion designer Jordy Arthur Vaesen reviving historical traditions through modern design?

The fashion designer talks about a dress made from cobalt blue tulle ruffles arranged in a zigzag pattern which makes it look interesting and unique. It has been said that the dress is built on a semi-circle shape which helps it hang nicely and look good. This design adds movement and elegance to the dress. The designer got ideas from old fashion pieces in the city museum’s collection using them as a base for the design. But the designer also made many personal changes to create a unique look. This mix of history and personal style shows in the final dress. In Spanish times the image of Virga Jesse was adorned with beautiful garments and jewelry by wealthy families to seek forgiveness for their sins. However during this period the image was changed according to the attire rather than the attire being based on the image. This practice was discontinued in the 1970s. Now 50 years later fashion designer Jordy Arthur Vaesen is reviving this tradition. The 47th edition of the Virga Jessefeesten is starting this Sunday on 11th August with a rehearsal for the procession on Monday and the first procession taking place on August 15. There will also be processions on August 18 and 24. Attendees can expect a beautiful procession based on the life of Maria Virga Jesse along with a festive program featuring hundreds of activities including theater, culture, and exhibitions in museums. There will be a variety of music from classical to popular. A small train will run around the city center of Hasselt and visitors can explore on foot with a guide or brochure. A summer ferry will operate between the city center and Herkenrode via the Albert Canal.
