Sint-Truiden (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): Heavy rains in Belgium’s Limburg province caused severe flooding in 2021 leading the Flemish government to recognize affected towns and offer compensation to aid recovery efforts.

In June and July 2021 heavy rain caused serious flooding in many cities in Belgium especially in Limburg province. The heavy rains made rivers overflow flooding homes, basements, and streets. This caused a lot of damage to buildings, roads and local businesses. The flooding was so serious that many people were worrie, and the Flemish government was asked to officially call it a disaster. This would help the affected areas get emergency money and support for recovery and rebuilding. Recognizing it as a disaster would also help different government levels and emergency services work together to meet the immediate needs of the people and communities affected.

What support is available for Sint-Truiden flood victims?

In 2021 the Flemish government recognized 79 towns in Flanders that were really affected by heavy rain including 15 in Limburg. Some of these towns are Borgloon Diepenbeek, Genk, and Hasselt. They got this recognition because they faced a lot of damage and problems from the rain. When the government recognizes these towns it usually means they will get help to recover and fix the damage. This support makes it easier for them to get what they need to deal with the situation and be ready for any future storms.

The Flemish government’s decision to recognize municipalities affected by heavy rain and flooding includes compensation for people business owners and farmers who suffered damage. In Sint-Truiden which was recognized for the flooding on June 29, 30 and July 8, 2021, this decision is very important. Alderman Hilde Vautmans from Open VLD who is in charge of Agriculture and Fruit Growing in Sint-Truiden is happy about this recognition. This recognition means that people who lost things because of the flooding can apply for compensation to help cover their damages. The support is available for different areas including agriculture which is very important in Sint-Truiden. This help is meant to aid recovery and provide financial relief to those affected by the severe weather.

It has been said that if 104 reports were made in Sint-Truiden alone after the heavy rain it clearly shows that it was a major disaster for all of Limburg. While we’re happy that the recognition has finally come it feels late since it’s been 3 years already, and by the time people receive their compensation another year will have passed. There are certain conditions for individuals, business owners, and farmers to meet before applying, such as having damage over 500 euros.
