British PM Keir Starmer and EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen spoke about “the need to secure a just and enduring peace in Ukraine” on a telephone call, a Downing Street spokesperson stated.
The telephonic conversation comes on the back of situations among European leaders over being excluded by US President Donald Trump from discussions with Russia on the future of the dispute in Ukraine, which marks its third anniversary.
Ahead of the three-year anniversary of Russia’s barbaric illegal war, they discussed the need to secure a just and enduring peace in Ukraine, and agreed that Europe must step up for the good of collective European security,
the spokesperson stated in a statement.
What did Starmer and Zelensky talk about during their phone call?
In a phone call with President Volodymyr Zelensky separately, Starmer reaffirmed
UK’s rock-solid support for Ukraine,
a Downing Street official said.
“They both shared the view that this was a moment of huge importance for Ukraine’s future and European security writ large,” read the statement released at a time of tense relations between the US and Ukraine.
The Prime Minister repeated that Ukraine must be at the heart of any negotiations to end the war,
the spokesperson stated, saying that Starmer would examine the conflict at his discussion with Trump in Washington next week.
PM Starmer is expecting to use his discussions with Trump to serve as a “bridge” between the US and Europe and provide territorial and security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of an agreement to conclude the war. The task examines increasingly difficult following a public spat in the last week between Zelensky and Trump, who referred to the Ukrainian leader as a “dictator”.
Trump also blamed Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron for failing to end the war in a Fox News interview.
