Texas Takes Charge: Building Walls Amidst US-Mexico Migration Crisis

Juarez, Mexico: Migrants, mainly from Venezuela, seek asylum before Title 42 ends at Mexico-US border (May 13, 2023). Seeking safety, hope, and a better future

Belgium (Brussels Morning Newspaper), Governor Greg Abbott continues his standoff with President Joe Biden after entering into force the Monday Supreme Court Ruling that border control agents can take down razor wire that Texas installed on its border. The governor says that they will continue adding more razor wire as it is in the state’s constitutional right to defend itself. Governor Greg Abbott added in his speech that the federal government failed at its duty to enforce laws and states had every right to step in to protect their borders.

Representatives of the Democratic Party are calling Texas’s actions unconstitutional, but 25 states with Republican governors backed Greg Abbott and signed a joint letter in support of Texas. ‘President Biden and his Administration have left Americans and our country completely vulnerable to unprecedented illegal immigration pouring across the Southern border.

Instead of upholding the rule of law and securing the border, the Biden Administration has attacked and sued Texas for stepping up to protect American citizens from historic levels of illegal immigrants, deadly drugs like fentanyl, and terrorists entering our country, ‘- was said in the letter. The appeal of Republican governors included signatures of such figures as Ron DeSantis, governor of Florida, and Doug Burgum, governor of North Dakota. The governors believe that the Biden administration has failed in its duty to defend the borders of the United States.

Joe Biden’s immigration policy was opposite to Donald Trump’s and was concentrated on stopping the constriction of the Mexico border wall, relaxation of travel bans to the US, strong decrease in deportation.

Consequently, the immigration rate to the US dramatically increased, which can’t be said during Donald Trump’s Administration. From the beginning of Trump’s term in office in 2016, immigration was decreasing slightly and then drastically in 2019, which can be explained as the consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, Joe Biden’s policy from the beginning only attracted new waves of legal and illegal migrants, especially after the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war in 2022.

Furthermore, the joint protest of the governors of 26 states slightly weakened Joe Biden’s popularity, which means that we can expect more votes for the Republican party in the nearest primaries.
