Kyiv (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Russian forces conducted a broad attack on Zaporizhzhia in southern Ukraine, resulting in one death, at least 24 injuries, and damage to infrastructure and homes, authorities reported Saturday.
The Ukrainian air force confirmed on Telegram that five missiles and 24 drones struck seven areas, with debris falling on 21. The regional governor, Ivann Fedorov, stated there were 24 injuries in the south-eastern city of Zaporizhzhia, including three children, after a Russian attack.
What damage did the missile and drone strikes cause?
Fedorov stated there were 25,000 residents without power after the attack in Zaporizhzhia. The local energy utility, however, stated that the attack damaged its equipment, and it is now looking at the damage. By early Saturday, Ukrzaliznytsia, the Ukrainian state-owned railway, reported that it had repaired the damage to its infrastructure in the Kyiv region.
Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stated that all emergency services are currently at the scene. He further reported that the attack impacted regions including Volyn, Dnipro, Donetsk, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhzhia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, Rivne, Sumy, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, Cherkasy, Chernivtsi, and Chernihiv. He noted that numerous fires have erupted and that civilian infrastructure—such as homes and businesses—suffered the most damage.
When was Zaporizhzhia previously targeted by Russia?
Russian forces continued using ground operations and used occasional shelling conducted around detonation ranges of around 30 km away from Zaporizhzhia as part of their ongoing operations as part of operations in their ongoing war. Attacks supporting operations included several missile launches and drone attacks that resulted in noted casualties and reported high infrastructure vulnerability from early January to February 2025.
