Moscow (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Russia’s deputy foreign minister said preparations are in progress for a face-to-face exchange between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

Talking to Russian state media, Sergei Ryabkov stated a possible Putin-Trump meeting could involve broad discussions on global issues, not just the fight in Ukraine.

The question is about starting to move towards normalizing relations between our countries, finding ways to resolve the most acute and potentially very, very dangerous situations, of which there are many, Ukraine among them,

he stated.

However, he stated efforts to organize such a gathering are at an early stage, and that making it happen will need “the most intensive preparatory work.”

Ryabkov also said that U.S. and Russian diplomats could meet “within the next two weeks,” to pave the way for further discussions between senior officials.

What agreements were made at the recent Saudi Arabia session?

A few days ago, Russian and U.S. representatives arranged to start performing toward ending the fighting in Ukraine and enhancing their diplomatic and economic relations, according to the two countries’ top delegates, at a high-level session in Saudi Arabia that marked an incredible about-face in U.S. foreign policy under President Trump.

After the gathering, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the two sides arranged broadly to follow three purposes: to fix staffing at their separate embassies in Washington and Moscow, to form a high-level team to sustain Ukraine peace talks, and to study closer relations and economic collaboration.

He emphasized, however, that the discussions— which were followed by his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, and other senior Russian and U.S. officials — marked the start of a conversation, and more work required to be done. Lavrov, for his part, praised the meeting as “very useful.” No Ukrainian officeholders were present at the session.
