Zaporizhzhia (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Russia launched a missile and drone strike on the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia. The strike killed one and wounded 3, officials said.

The city Governor, Ivan Fedorov, said the strike damaged an energy facility and cut electricity to more than 20,000 residents and heat to some 17,000. He stated that Russian forces attacked the city with drones first. After that, the city was struck with ballistic missiles during an air-raid alert over more than six hours.

One building was demolished, and another 30 were impaired, Fedorov said. Zaporizhzhia, a strategic industrial area near front-line fighting, has come under regular attack by Russian forces.

How often has Russia struck Zaporizhzhia since the start of the War?

In February 2022, since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the city has suffered various attacks. After the invasion on 24 February 2022, the Russian forces started shelling the Zaporizhzhia. The first major attack was on February 26, targeting the trolleybus depot and the airport. This started the continuous military operations in the region.

Between April 26 and 28, 2022, two missile attacks struck Zaporizhzhia. There were victims among the civilian population and destruction in residential areas, including one killing and three casualties on April 26 and, on April 28, three more causalities from another strike. Attacks by rockets and drones caused a large number of civilian casualties. In one incident, seven rockets hit Zaporizhzhia on October 6, killing 17 civilians and injuring over a dozen more.

Recently, on January 8, 2025, Russian forces killed at least 13 civilians and injured around 30 in a guided bomb strike. The attack occurred during the day when the areas targeted were residential, prompting the Ukrainian officials to condemn the attacks, citing the deliberate targeting of civilians.
