Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper): Before banks report funds to the government they will contact the owners of dormant accounts which have been inactive for five years. Any money not claimed after 30 years will be taken by the government. In order to recover your money within 30 days you should check for any old accounts that you might have used on MyMinFin website of the Federal Finance Department.

It has been said that if it happens that you do not engage with your bank for an extended period of time five successive years  then it shall be regarded as silent. The bank has to communicate with you through letters written to the last known address informing you about above-mentioned matter and requesting an account usage again. In case there is no response from your side they will make every possible attempt on tracking you down just like through other means or by asking government agencies for assistance. In cases where they are unable to reach you the lender may need at some point in time to submit strange account state information to a supervisory body or surrender this sum of money to the state

How Can You Claim Money from Dormant Accounts in Belgium?

According to the resources if there’s nobody claiming a dime then it goes to the Federal Finance Department where they keep it for 30 years if it’s over 60 euros waiting for the owner. If nobody claims it after 30 years that money goes into the state’s funds.

Unless somebody comes forth to withdraw the money it goes to the Federal Finance Department. If more than 60 euros they keep it for 30 years on the hope that the owner will turn up. Provided that no one claims within the 30 years the money goes into the state’s funds. Check if you still have an old account with money in it and claim it with MyMinFin of the Federal Ministry of Finance. Log in with your electronic ID or other details, as may be required, to get your account information.Log in and access the Mijn betalingen tab which translates to My Payments in Dutch. Scan for any cash that may exist there. If you find any amounts you are able to apply for them to be released to you. You should receive the funds after requesting them unless unforeseen circumstances arise within a month period following their application time.
