Middelkerke (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Middelkerke mayor Jean-Marie Dedecker underwent medical treatment for his heart, which proved successful. He received 3 bypasses. A medical update announced that Dedecker will spend six weeks recuperating due to open-heart surgery.

The mayor of Middelkerke, Jean-Marie Dedecker, successfully experienced a surgical operation to receive three bypasses on his heart. The operation took several hours to complete, but Dedecker recovered from the surgery. The mayor chose to spend six weeks in medical focus while temporarily suspending his political activities this week.

“His wife let us know that everything went well,”

Says acting mayor Henk Dierendonck (LDD).

“He was taken to recovery yesterday evening after a successful operation that lasted a few hours. His heart functioned very well. We look forward to seeing him again soon.”

“He will now be monitored for about 3 days in the intensive care unit. After that, he will go to a regular room. And by the end of next week, he will be home to continue his recovery there.”

What is the history and context of this news?

Jean-Marie Dedecker has led Middelkerke as its mayor since his appointment in 2013. The heart bypass surgery that Dedecker underwent remains a frequently performed operation for people suffering from serious coronary artery disease.

Medical experts have established that patients require six to twelve weeks for full healing from this surgical procedure, but their specific recovery time depends on their overall health state. Dedecker’s brief departure from the mayoral office presents a crucial time for Middelkerke’s municipal governance because Henk Dierendonck now assumes responsibility for the mayor’s duties.
