Kyiv (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – According to Ukraine’s military, Russia launched its largest drone attack on Ukraine overnight since the onset of the war. This escalated Moscow’s military campaign even as it engaged in direct peace negotiations with Kyiv on Friday.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia fired 273 Shahed drones in a single night, mostly aimed at the downtown Kyiv district. According to Mykola Kalashnik, the governor of the Kyiv area, a 28-year-old lady was killed, and three others, including a 4-year-old kid, were wounded.
How deadly was the overnight assault on Ukraine?
Ukraine’s emergency services reportedly said that the “massive attack” resulted in many fires and that 55 rescue personnel had been sent in. During the night, air defense units eliminated 88 drones. Additionally, the attack involved 128 simulator drones, which were lost en route without causing any damage, according to a statement from Ukraine’s air force on Telegram.
Vadym Filashkin, the chairman of the Donetsk regional military administration, said that Russian shelling killed one person and injured eight others in the Donetsk area on Saturday. According to regional military officials, Russian drones also targeted the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia districts.
Ukraine’s parliament leader, Ruslan Stefanchuk, stated:
“The air raid alarm lasted nearly nine hours.”
This is the appearance of Putin’s “sincere desire for peace.”
The assault damaged a high-rise, set garages on fire, and demolished residential structures.
“This is terror in its purest form,”
Stefanchuk wrote.
What transpired during the latest Russia-Ukraine discussions?
The interim ceasefire that Kyiv and its allies have been calling for was not mediated in Friday’s first direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in three years. An agreement to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war on each side was reached during the 100 minutes of negotiations in Istanbul. On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The discussions concluded days of negotiations: Russia’s President Vladimir Putin requested an in-person meeting but did not show up, opting to send a junior delegation instead after dismissing Ukraine’s offer for a 30-day ceasefire.
