Moscow (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The Kremlin stated on Monday that it was not notified of the outcomes of the discussions held between US, Ukrainian, and European officials in Geneva over the weekend.
Top officials from the US, Ukraine, and security advisers from the UK, France, and Germany will meet in Geneva on Sunday to review the US draft plan aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine.
The United States and Ukraine announced in a joint statement following their discussions that they have developed a “refined peace framework,” though they did not share any details.
The Kremlin said that it had not received any official information about the outcome of the Ukraine peace talks.
“We did not receive any information,”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, while adding it was aware “adjustments” were made to a US plan to end the conflict with Kyiv that Moscow had welcomed.
Peskov stated that the Kremlin will not discuss any draft agreement details through the media. He also mentioned that there are no scheduled meetings this week between Russian and U.S. negotiators.
How did the talks progress in Geneva this weekend?
Following Sunday’s discussions, no public statement was issued regarding the revised plan’s approach to issues like ensuring Ukraine’s security against future Russian threats and financing Ukraine’s reconstruction.
“Both sides agreed the consultations were highly productive. The discussions showed meaningful progress toward aligning positions and identifying clear next steps,”
officials said in a joint statement following talks in Geneva, adding that the sides agreed on the need for a
“sustainable and just peace”.
The US and Ukraine also reiterated their readiness to keep working together to
“secure a peace that ensures Ukraine’s security, stability, and reconstruction”,
the joint statement said.
What does Zelensky say now after the Geneva talks?
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy mentioned that negotiations are still in progress.
“We all continue working with partners, especially the United States, to look for compromises that will strengthen but not weaken us,”
Zelenskyy said via video link from a separate summit of Ukraine’s allies in Sweden.
Zelenskyy also said Moscow must pay for the war in Ukraine and that a decision on using frozen Russian assets was crucial.
“Right now, we are at a critical moment, and we are working with the United States, European partners, and many others to define steps that can end Russia’s war against us, against Ukraine, and bring real security.”
