Paris (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – French President Emmanuel Macron on social media platform X said he will address the nation on March 05, 2025, at around 1900 GMT.

“In this moment of uncertainty, where the world is confronted by large challenges, I will address you tonight,”

Macron noted that European Union leaders are scheduled to hold a special summit devoted to security and Ukraine.

Governments in Europe are rushing to increase defence spending and backing Ukraine in its war against invading Russian forces amid growing suspicions over the pledge of the U.S. government to defend Europe. Earlier this week, U.S. President Donald Trump halted military aid to Kyiv, his latest move to alter U.S. policy and assume a more conciliatory stance toward Russia.

French government spokeswoman Sophie Primas said France was operating on re-establishing relations between the United States and Ukraine to reach a

“lasting and robust peace.”

“We have proposed a truce … France and Europe are trying to reestablish a link between the United States and Ukraine,”

Primas conveyed to LCI television.

How does France plan to restore US-Ukraine relations?

Two days earlier, Emmanuel Macron and his foreign minister announced that France is proposing a partial one-month truce between Russia and Ukraine, as European efforts to strengthen support for Kyiv accelerate in the face of sceptical US backing.

The French foreign minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, stated:

“Such a truce – on air, sea and energy infrastructure – would allow us to determine whether Vladimir Putin is acting in good faith”.

He said it would also enable Europe to gauge Putin’s attitude to “real peace negotiations”.

Macron and his foreign minister said that France and the UK are proposing a partial one-month truce between Russia and Ukraine that would engage in covering air, sea and energy infrastructure raids but not include ground fighting.

The remarks came amid a storm of European diplomacy to increase Western support for Ukraine after a meeting between President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and U.S. President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.
