Belgium (Brussels Morning newspaper) On the 10th anniversary of the tragic Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh, which claimed the lives of 1,134 workers, including children, the European Parliament is poised to implement stronger measures to prevent human rights violations and environmental damage within the global value chain. MEP Adrian Lazara Vazquez, shadow rapporteur for the committee, has hailed the new Due Diligence directive as a powerful tool to foster a business environment in Europe that combines competitiveness with responsibility towards human rights and the planet.

The proposed Due Diligence directive, put forward by Renew Europe Commissioner Didier Reynders, aims to ensure that large companies take proactive steps to identify, mitigate, and ultimately eradicate any negative impacts they may have on human rights and the environment. This includes addressing critical issues such as child labor, labor exploitation, pollution, and biodiversity loss.

MEP Adrian Lazara Vazquez emphasized the importance of balancing freedom with responsibility, stating, “Because freedom without responsibility is unfair, and responsibility without freedom is unbearable.” By holding companies accountable for their actions and encouraging responsible business practices, the directive aims to create a level playing field that upholds human rights and protects the environment.

The proposed directive seeks to enhance companies’ understanding of their responsibilities along their value chains. By implementing due diligence measures, businesses can identify and address potential risks, thereby mitigating reputational damage and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability. Moreover, the directive can play a vital role in promoting the adoption of human rights and environmental standards, not only within Europe but also in developing countries. This, in turn, can contribute to improving living standards and the well-being of communities worldwide.

The need for such measures is underscored by the anniversary of the Rana Plaza tragedy, which serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that can arise from inadequate safeguards within global supply chains. The Due Diligence directive represents a significant step towards preventing future human rights violations and environmental degradation.

The new rules set forth by the directive would apply to large companies operating within the EU, ensuring that they fulfill their due diligence obligations to prevent and address any negative impacts resulting from their operations. By requiring companies to assess their supply chains, implement appropriate risk management strategies, and take remedial action when necessary, the directive seeks to create a business environment that not only promotes competitiveness but also upholds the principles of responsibility.

The proposal has garnered widespread support within the European Parliament as a crucial step towards creating a more sustainable and ethically conscious business ecosystem. As the European Parliament prepares for the committee vote, the directive is expected to be met with strong backing from MEPs who recognize the urgency of addressing human rights violations and environmental challenges across the global value chain.

The implementation of the Due Diligence directive will serve as a testament to the EU’s commitment to corporate responsibility and its dedication to promoting a business environment that aligns economic growth with social and environmental well-being.
