Lahbib’s visit to the Middle East:

EU Commissioner Hadja Lahbib is currently visiting the Middle East, focusing on various humanitarian and political issues, particularly in Syria and the broader region. During her visit, Lahbib announced a significant €235 million aid package for Syria. This was the first visit of an EU commissioner to Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. This announcement was made in Damascus.

The EU has committed nearly €2 billion for humanitarian aid in 2025, with a significant portion allocated to the Middle East. Lahbib stressed the necessity of inclusive governance in Syria, and the support from the EU would be through emergency assistance: food, medical aid, and educational support for children.

She emphasized the need for unhampered access for humanitarian aid in war-torn areas mainly because conflict has a very devastating effect on women and children. According to her, reconstruction cannot be initiated in an area without first having peace and stability.
