Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Elon Musk got into a heated exchange with the ex-EU Commissioner Thierry Breton, calling him a “tyrant of Europe” as they exchanged barbs online.

The confrontation arose after former European Commissioner Thierry Breton, in an interview, said the European Union has means to nullify a potential election success of the AfD:

”We did it in Romania, and we will obviously do it in Germany if necessary.”

In reaction, the former Commissioner reportedly commented on the situation, expressing surprise at the label “Tyrant of Europe” and clarifying that the EU has no mechanism to nullify any election within its member states. They apparently pointed out that this was not what was conveyed in the video, which was specifically about the application of the Digital Services Act (DSA) and its moderation obligations. The ex-Commissioner suggested that there may have been a misunderstanding or mistranslation and raised concerns about the possibility of it being another instance of fake news.

How does Musk endorse Germany’s far-right AfD party?

Tesla’s Chief Executive Elon Musk publicly endorsed the far-right Alternative for Germany party on February 23, 2025. Before the election, he openly spoke with the head of AfD, Alice Weidel, in an online talk and said that “only AfD can save Germany, period.” He advised the Germans to vote for the party to create necessary change before conditions got worse. This endorsement has sparked significant controversy and criticism within Germany’s political establishment, with officials accusing Musk of attempting to influence the electoral process.

The German government has been up in arms regarding Musk’s actions, insisting that elections are domestic affairs and must be left free of external influence. His statement was typical of his larger libertarian sentiments, and he once again brought focus to the party, which was infamous for being anti-immigrant and far-right.
