Bruges, Belgium, 21 September, (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Club Brugge beat Genk 3-0 at the Jan Breydel Stadium on Sunday, with Carlos Forbs, Han-Beom Lee and Brandon Mechele scoring in a decisive Jupiler Pro League victory. The result gave Ivan Leko’s side three points from the Matchday 7 contest and extended their strong start to the domestic campaign.
Forbs gives Club Brugge first-half lead
Genk made a lively start and threatened early through Noah Adedeji-Sternberg, whose effort was stopped by Club Brugge goalkeeper Yann Sommer.
However, the hosts struck first in the 15th minute. Hans Vanaken supplied Forbs, who beat the Genk defence before finishing to put Brugge 1-0 ahead. Genk had another important opportunity before half-time, but Sommer denied Jeppe Erenbjerg to preserve the advantage.
Club Brugge thought they had doubled their lead shortly after the restart when Nicolò Tresoldi found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.
Lee and Mechele settle match after break
The second goal arrived in the 58th minute. Joaquin Seys delivered a free-kick and South Korean defender Han-Beom Lee headed home to give the hosts breathing room.
Just five minutes later, Club Brugge effectively settled the contest. Another Seys set-piece caused problems for the visitors, with experienced defender Brandon Mechele scoring in the 63rd minute to make it 3-0.
Genk continued searching for a response, creating opportunities for substitutes and forcing Brugge to defend, but Sommer and the home defence completed the clean sheet.
Ivan Leko praises Club Brugge performance
Club Brugge coach Ivan Leko described the outcome as “a well-deserved victory” in his post-match reaction published by the club.
Genk’s official match account acknowledged that the visitors created opportunities but failed to convert them, describing the final result as a “sour defeat” and saying the three-goal margin was too heavy given the chances produced by both sides.
Result strengthens Brugge’s league position
The victory left Club Brugge with 18 points from a possible 21 after seven league matches. They entered the international break one point behind Union Saint-Gilloise and Gent, according to the club’s post-match reporting.
Genk, meanwhile, remained on nine points from seven matches. The defeat followed draws against Anderlecht and Gent and increased the importance of finding greater consistency when domestic competition resumes.
Club Brugge head into international break
For Brugge, the 3-0 result provides further momentum after an opening seven league matches that have produced six victories and one defeat.
For Genk, the immediate task will be addressing defensive vulnerability from set-pieces and improving conversion of scoring opportunities. With the international break now interrupting the domestic schedule, both clubs have time before returning to Jupiler Pro League action.
