Beijing (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian commented on the anticipated meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, stating China is “glad to see” Washington and Moscow communicate with increased efficacy and cooperation, Xinhua News reported.

A spokesperson from China’s foreign ministry, Lin Jian, said Beijing supports all mechanisms to peacefully resolve the Ukraine situation and was satisfied that Russia and the United States have the option to keep communicating, were working on improving relations, and were attempting to resolve the crisis politically.

On Friday, August 15, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska for a summit on the war in Ukraine. It will be Trump and Putin’s first face-to-face encounter since Trump was re-elected to the presidency in the 2024 election, and the first time Putin has come to the U.S.

Lin restated China’s backing for a peaceful settlement to the fighting in Ukraine.

“We hope all parties concerned and stakeholders will take part in the negotiation process in due course and reach a fair, lasting and binding peace agreement acceptable to parties concerned at an early date,”

He stated, without remarking on the absence of Ukrainian representatives at the session.

How did Xi and Putin discuss US-Russia relations?

A few days ago, Chinese President Xi Jinping told his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in a call, that China was happy to see a thaw in relations between Moscow and Washington, state media said, as Xi had called Putin on Friday at the Russian leader’s request, Chinese media said.

It reported that Putin updated Xi on recent contacts and communications between the US and Russia and the situation in Ukraine.

“China is glad to see Russia and the US maintain contact, improve their relations, and promote a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis,”

State news agency Xinhua’s English service quoted Xi as telling Putin.
