Brussels, 13 October, (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A Brussels police officer has been fatally shot during an operation involving a stolen vehicle in Jette, triggering a murder investigation and expressions of sympathy from Belgian political leaders. The 41-year-old officer, identified as Nordine, was killed overnight between 12 and 13 October while participating in an operation connected to an armed carjacking in Walloon Brabant.

The fatal shooting has brought renewed attention to the dangers facing Belgian law enforcement personnel during operations involving armed suspects.

Armed Carjacking Investigation Leads Police to Jette

The incident began after a vehicle was reportedly stolen during an armed carjacking involving several individuals in Walloon Brabant.

Investigators used automatic number plate recognition technology to trace the stolen vehicle towards Brussels.

Police subsequently located the vehicle in Jette, where officers from several units were involved in the operation.

Nordine, a member of the Anti-Aggression Brigade within the Brussels-Capital/Ixelles police district, approached the area while colleagues remained nearby.

When the officer failed to return, fellow officers searched for him and discovered him seriously wounded near the stolen vehicle.

He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators recovered firearms from the scene as they began examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Prosecutors Launch Murder Investigation

Brussels Public Prosecutor Julien Moinil confirmed that judicial authorities were investigating the officer’s death as murder.

Several individuals were detained as police worked to determine who was responsible for the shooting.

Authorities also discovered suspected drugs inside the stolen vehicle, prompting a separate investigation into their origin and possible connection to the incident.

However, prosecutors have not established whether the drugs were linked to the original carjacking or the fatal shooting.

Investigators are examining forensic evidence, recovered weapons and the movements of individuals believed to have been involved.

Belgian Leaders Respond to Fatal Police Shooting

The death of the Brussels police officer prompted expressions of sympathy from senior Belgian officials.

Prime Minister Bart De Wever offered condolences to the officer’s family and colleagues, acknowledging the risks faced by police personnel carrying out their duties.

Brussels Minister-President Boris Dilliès also expressed sympathy following the killing.

Brussels Mayor Philippe Close visited Jette after the incident and highlighted the dangers officers encounter when responding to serious criminal activity.

The reactions reflected concern over the loss of a serving police officer during an active investigation.

Fatal Shooting Highlights Risks Facing Brussels Police

The incident has raised questions about operational safety during armed vehicle interceptions and investigations involving potentially dangerous suspects.

The Anti-Aggression Brigade carries out specialist police operations, including interventions where officers may encounter armed individuals.

The circumstances of Nordine’s death remain under judicial investigation, and authorities have not publicly established a definitive motive.

The shooting also occurred during a night when another fatal shooting was reported in Ixelles. No confirmed connection between the incidents has been established.

What Happens Next in the Jette Investigation?

Belgian judicial authorities are continuing their investigation into the officer’s killing.

Forensic examinations, witness interviews and analysis of recovered firearms are expected to help investigators reconstruct the events surrounding the shooting.

Prosecutors must also determine the involvement of those detained and whether evidence supports formal criminal charges.

The separate investigation into suspected drugs discovered inside the vehicle will continue alongside the murder inquiry.

Further developments will depend on official findings released by prosecutors and judicial authorities.

The fatal shooting has left the Brussels police community mourning a colleague while investigators work to establish responsibility for his death.
