Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper): Brussels Mobility will ban vehicles over 3.5 tonnes on Koolminenkaai starting December 23 due to problems with the quay wall. Hainaut Quay will also be close to cars for safety, and spokesperson Inge Paemen said it’s unclear if traffic will need to be redirected.
The Port of Brussels has found problems with the quay wall under Koolminenkaai, and there are issues with the sewer system nearby. Because of this, Brussels Mobility will not allow vehicles over 3.5 tonnes starting December 23. The local authorities and partners are checking the situation, but it’s unclear whether other traffic will need to be redirected for a long time. Spokesperson Inge Paemen said it’s too early to decide on that.
What changes are coming to Hainaut Quay and Koolminenkaai traffic restrictions?
Next Monday, Hainaut Quay will change. The southern part has been closed since summer. Now, the Brussels government will not allow any cars or motorized vehicles on the quay from Gentsesteenweg to Ninoofsepoort for safety reasons. Pedestrians and cyclists can still use it. Brussels Mobility thinks there won’t be major traffic problems. A spokesperson said the main issue is local heavy traffic on Koolminenkaai, and there will still be a btpass through Barthelemylaan for Henegouwenkaai.
Koolmijnenkaai and Henegouwenkaai won’t open again soon, says Brussels Mobility. A spokesperson, Paemen, mentioned that the construction sites look messy for the area, so they will try to make them better after winter. This might mean putting up wooden panels with drawings instead of the blue and yellow fences, but they are still figuring out the details.
