Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The Brussels court appointed an independent expert to review alleged fraud in the 2025 medical entrance exam. Lawyer Christophe Vangel represents 30 students; 20–30 participants are suspected of cheating.

As VRT News reported, the Brussels courts have taken action in the case of alleged fraud in the recent medical entrance exam. The judge in the summary proceedings appointed a court expert to investigate possible irregularities. At the same time, the judge handling the preliminary injunction case also named an expert to examine the exam process.

Christophe Vangel, the lawyer representing around 30 students who filed the case, confirmed the appointments after the first hearing yesterday, Sep 3, 2025. The Flemish government had requested a delay and opposed the appointment of any expert. Authorities argued that outside involvement could affect their own investigation. The court rejected this request and allowed the experts to proceed.

What did Flanders court find in 2025 medical exam fraud case?

Flemish Minister for Education Ben Weyts said her investigation found 20 to 30 participants suspected of fraud. She added that there is no evidence of widespread cheating and that a new exam is not necessary. Vangel said he will study the expert’s report before giving further statements.

“It proves that the students were right to suspect fraud,”

Vangeel said yesterday in response to the conclusions of Demir’s investigation.

“As long as we don’t have clarity on what exactly the minister commissioned, who did it, and how it was conducted, we maintain our demand for an expert to be appointed.”

The court has given detailed instructions to the expert appointed in the medical entrance exam fraud case. The expert must first review the Flemish government’s investigation. Their job is to check if the investigation was done correctly and followed technical rules to identify possible digital fraud.

If the expert finds that the government’s inquiry was not carried out properly, they can start their own independent investigation to see if fraud occurred. The students who requested the expert must now pay a deposit to cover the fees. Once the payment is made, the expert must begin the investigation within 3 days.

The court has set a deadline of 1 month for the final report, though the expert can ask for more time if needed. The investigation will extend beyond September 22, 2025, when the new academic year starts.

The controversy over the medical entrance exam began earlier this year, in mid-2025, when allegations of cheating surfaced following the release of the exam results. Around 30 students filed a legal challenge in early August, claiming irregularities in the exam process.

The Flemish government launched its own investigation in late July 2025, which identified 20 to 30 participants suspected of fraud. On September 3, 2025, the court appointed an independent expert to examine both the government’s investigation and the possibility of further irregularities.
