Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper): Beliris is seeking candidates for a canal swimming pool project between Sainctelette and Redersbrug, proposed by professor Gérald Ledent and alderman Benoit Hellings, with applications due by December 3.
Last Friday on 25th October, Beliris began a study to explore the possibility of building a large swimming pool in the canal between Sainctelette and Redersbrug. This study won’t start immediately, as it was announced over a year and a half ago. Now, Beliris is looking for candidates to assist with the project. The Brussels Fund mentioned they are working with the resources. Gérald Ledent, the professor behind the canal bath idea, said the delay shows there wasn’t much political importance. However, he is pleased that the search for candidates is finally underway.
What’s next for the Brussels canal swimming pool project?
Ledent, who previously proposed a swimming pool to the Brussels city council, is working with Alderman Benoit Hellings on a plan for a 350-meter-long pool in the canal between Sainctelette and Redersbrug. The pool will use canal water that is cleaned by a large filter, and boats will still be able to pass by. Beliris is now studying this idea along with plans to lower the quays for water activities, and they will also create a master plan to integrate the project into the area while involving residents in the process.
The call for candidates is focusing on the Akenkaai area, which is easy to reach from the city center. This spot is seen as having great potential for development because it’s close to places like the Kanal-Pompidou Museum and the Kaaitheater. It also connects to parks through walking paths. Candidates can apply until December 3, but it’s unclear what will happen next, as some people who support outdoor swimming in Brussels believe the project needs more political support.
