Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – From 2026, Belgian electric car owners can voluntarily include battery status on the Car-Pass. Ministers Rob Beenders and Jean-Luc Crucke aim to boost transparency and the second-hand EV market.
As GVA News reported, from 2026, electric car owners in Belgium will be able to include the battery status on the Car-Pass. Federal Ministers Rob Beenders of Consumer Protection and Jean-Luc Crucke of Mobility have signed a declaration of intent that allows the battery condition of electric cars to be shared when the vehicle is sold.
The measure is voluntary, so sellers can choose whether to provide this information. According to Beenders’ office, a mandatory requirement would need a standardised European measurement system, which is not yet available.
What battery information will Belgium include on the car-pass?
The ministers say the declaration will support the second-hand market for electric vehicles in Belgium. The battery capacity will be shown as a percentage. He mentioned that this allows buyers in Brussels and other Belgian cities to make safer and more informed choices when buying a used electric car.
“It’s still too difficult for potential buyers of a used electric car to estimate the battery’s condition,”
says Beenders.
The Car-Pass system was introduced in Belgium in 2006 to stop odometer fraud and give buyers a clear record of a car’s mileage. Over the years, the system has been improved to include more information about vehicles. Since 2024, garages in Brussels and across Belgium must record all maintenance and repair work done on cars. This ensures buyers have full transparency about a vehicle’s history.
