Warsaw (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Poland’s Foreign Ministry announced Thursday that the UN Security Council will have an “emergency” session to examine Russia’s violation of the country’s airspace.
Poland called for an emergency UN Security Council meeting on Friday to discuss the drone incidents in its airspace. Four other members of the UN Security Council have reportedly also requested a meeting, according to Reuters news agency.
“Following Poland’s request, a UN Security Council emergency meeting will be convened regarding the violation of Polish airspace by Russia,”
The ministry posted on X.
Poland’s action comes in response to a rare overnight operation where NATO allies helped Poland shoot down multiple Russian drones that crossed into its airspace on Wednesday.
How did Russian drones violate Polish airspace on Wednesday?
Poland announced that it had shot down Russian drones that it claims repeatedly entered its airspace during an attack on Ukraine. Polish and Dutch fighter jets based in Poland took down the drones. Russian drones and missiles have repeatedly entered the airspace of NATO countries Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Romania.
Wednesday’s incident, where Russia used drones to enter Poland’s airspace, marks the most serious cross-border incident involving a NATO member since the war in Ukraine started.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a warning about a “real risk” that the Ukraine war could escalate beyond its borders, following the incursion of Russian drones into Polish airspace.
“The incident, which reportedly took place during another large-scale Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine, again underlines the regional impact and real risk of expansion of this devastating conflict,”
Said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric. He also mentioned that Guterres is deeply concerned about reports that Russian military drones flew into Polish airspace overnight and caused damage to residential areas.

The UNSC repeatedly convened emergency sessions on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. For example, at the request of Ukraine, the UN Security Council met in emergency session on August 29, 2025, to discuss a major Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv, Ukraine, and other cities. The attack involved almost 600 drones and more than 30 ballistic and cruise missiles, killing at least 21 people, four of them children, and injuring dozens.
