Belgian Prime Minister advocates for nuclear power to tackle global warming crisis

Brussels (Brussels Morning) – Combating global warming requires carbon-neutral energy that is fast, safe, and reliable, said Belgian PM Alexander Dee Croo

The Prime Minister of Belgium arrived at the two day Nuclear Energy summit and explained global warming as an “enormous challenge”, proposing that nuclear energy will be effective to combat it. 

Belgian PM Remarks

“Every day in every corner of the globe, the consequences of climate change are becoming increasingly visible”, Alexander Dee Croo said in his opening speech at the two-day Nuclear Energy summit. 

He further added “It will require a perspective for sustainable growth. It will require us to have our citizens and industries on board. It will require nuclear energy as part of the mix”.

In his opening remarks, he also explained that nuclear energy will be helpful to reach the aim of producing zero greenhouse gas emissions. 

The coastline of Belgium is restricted and by the year 2030 the country’s offshore wind power production in the North Sea will increase four times, Prime Minister said. 

The Belgium Prime Minister also looked at how their country’s policy is changing, from shutting nuclear plants to extended operations, he added  and said it was widely accepted that the use of nuclear power had to be included in the mix alongside renewable energy. 

EU Council President Statement

European Council President Charles Michel said “Today, the world is more dangerous and unpredictable than ever. War, conflict, climate change, and the digital revolution”.

Further he stated that “We must be more independent in the energy sector and less dependent on unreliable regimes for energy. More independence means more freedom, freedom to act boldly to defend our interests and to promote our fundamental values”.

First Nuclear Energy Summit

This two day Nuclear Energy summit at Brussels will be joined by 300 CEOs, entrepreneurs, scientists, civil society representatives, and 37 political leaders. 

Most importantly, the main focus of the summit is on nuclear energy in addressing the global issues to lessen the use of fossil fuels, increase energy security and strengthen economic development.
