NEW DELHI, INDIA, 7 November – Brussels Morning Newspaper – Delhi topped Swiss air-quality monitoring group IQAir’s ranking of the world’s most polluted major cities on Saturday morning, as thick smog covered India’s capital ahead of Diwali celebrations.
At 10:35 a.m. local time, Delhi recorded a US Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 581, compared with 285 in Lahore, Pakistan. India’s Central Pollution Control Board separately reported an AQI of 363, classified as very poor. The two monitoring systems use different methodologies and are not directly comparable.
Delhi Air Pollution Forces Schools to Offer Online Classes
Authorities have instructed schools in Delhi and surrounding areas to offer online classes and encouraged employers to allow staff to work from home.
The restrictions come ahead of Diwali on November 8, when fireworks are expected to add to already dangerous pollution levels.
Officials have also introduced tighter controls on pollution-producing activities as weather conditions threaten to trap emissions over the capital.
Why Delhi’s Air Quality Is Deteriorating
Delhi faces recurring pollution emergencies during winter as vehicle exhaust, construction dust and smoke from agricultural burning accumulate under cooler, stagnant air.
Fireworks during Diwali can worsen the situation, raising concerns about respiratory illnesses and exposure to harmful fine particles.
