Kyiv, Ukraine, 31 August (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has discussed a planned Trump envoys Ukraine visit with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner as Washington continues diplomatic efforts aimed at ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Zelensky described his call with the two US representatives as “detailed and constructive” and said officials were working to finalise dates for them to travel to Ukraine. He also briefed the envoys on battlefield developments and recent Russian attacks.

Why are Witkoff and Kushner expected to visit Ukraine?

The proposed trip would allow Ukrainian officials and representatives of US President Donald Trump to continue direct discussions over possible routes towards ending the conflict.

Zelensky has sought to ensure Kyiv remains directly involved in negotiations affecting Ukraine’s security and territorial future. The planned meeting comes while military operations continue, leaving diplomacy closely linked to developments on the battlefield.

The Ukrainian president said he had informed Witkoff and Kushner about the military situation and Russian strikes. He also presented Ukraine’s assessment of Russian battlefield losses and territorial gains.

Zelensky said: “We shall see what the U.S. President’s representatives manage to achieve,” while suggesting September could bring further developments.

What could Ukraine face as diplomatic efforts continue?

The Trump envoys Ukraine visit could provide a clearer picture of Washington’s proposals and Kyiv’s position, but there is currently no confirmed comprehensive peace agreement ending the war.

Until negotiations produce concrete results, Ukraine continues to face Russian military operations and strikes alongside the economic and humanitarian pressures created by the conflict.

Any eventual settlement would also have major implications for Ukraine’s longer-term security and its relationships with the United States and European partners.

What happens next in the US peace push?

The immediate step is for Kyiv and Washington to finalise the dates for Witkoff and Kushner’s trip. No confirmed date for the visit was announced following the call.

Once the Trump envoys Ukraine visit takes place, attention will focus on whether discussions produce concrete diplomatic progress. Zelensky has indicated that September could prove significant, but neither Kyiv nor Washington has announced a timetable for reaching a final settlement.

Further developments will therefore depend on the planned talks, Russia’s position and continuing diplomatic engagement over possible terms for ending the war.
