Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – 4 Brussels-area care homes, including Residentie Jasmina in Beersel, were found failing care standards. These have been placed under increased supervision by the Department of Care. Issues include staff shortages, medicine handling, and poor hygiene. They have 15 days to submit improvement plans.

All 4  care homes, including Residentie Jasmina,  have been placed under increased supervision by the Department of Care. They have been told they need to fix the problems. Officials mentioned that they have 15 days to make a plan for how they will fix the problems.

The Department of Care will look at the plans to see if they are good enough.  If the care homes don’t make a plan or if the plan isn’t good enough, the Department could stop them from accepting new residents or even make them close down.

Why are 4 care centres in Brussels and Flemish Brabant under closer scrutiny?

4 care centres in Brussels were recently inspected and found to be failing to meet care standards.  The centres will be watched more closely.  At Vuerenveld in Wezembeek-Oppem, the inspectors found that the elderly residents weren’t getting the proper care they needed.  They weren’t getting enough help with things like keeping clean, moving around, and feeling good emotionally.

At Avondvrede in Linkebeek, the problems were a bit different.  The structure was not properly designed for individuals who utilise wheelchairs, and the facility lacked adequate personnel to assist the residents. Such issues are an issue since they impact the security, comfort, and dignity of the residents of these houses.

Another care centre in Brussels, Les Orangeries in Oudergem, also had too few staff to help the residents.  The inspectors also found problems with how medicine was being handled, stored, and given out.  The centre wasn’t very clean either.

A 4th care home, which wasn’t named, also had problems with medicine and cleanliness.  Because of all these problems, the government is watching all 4 care homes more closely.  This is usually only done when care centres have serious problems over and over again.  The government wants to make sure the care centres fix the problems so the elderly residents are safe and treated well.

The Department of Care found problems at Residentie Jasmina in Beersel.  They found that there weren’t enough staff working there, especially at night when there wasn’t always a nurse on duty.  Officials mentioned that this is a problem because elderly residents sometimes need help quickly, even at night.

The inspectors also found problems with how medicine was being handled and given out. The inspectors noticed that the residents weren’t being asked enough about how they wanted to be cared for. Residents weren’t able to make decisions about their care.
