Anderlecht (Brussels Morning Newspaper): Around 30 young people protested in Kuregem, Anderlecht, attempting to set fire to a Christmas tree. Police intervened, leading to eight arrests. A curfew for youths under 16 was announced to prevent further disturbances.

Last night in the Kuregem area of Anderlecht, around 30 young people protested in the streets. The situation got tense when they tried to set fire to a large Christmas tree on Raadsplein. The Brussels-South police quickly arrived to stop the fire but faced strong resistance from the group. According to Sarah Frederickx, a police spokesperson, it turned into a “cat-and-mouse game” as the young people tried to escape while continuing their disruptive actions.

What led to the youth curfew in Anderlecht amidst protests?

According to Authorities the situation became more serious when some young protesters began using fireworks against the police. Despite the chaos, officers were able to control things without anyone getting injured. Eight adults were arrested for their actions, but their identities and roles have not been released. They mentioned that this event raises concerns about safety in the area and shows that some people are willing to take extreme actions during protests.

In response to the recent trouble, local authorities have announced a curfew for youths aged 16 and under, starting tonight in the Kuregem district. This curfew aims to prevent further disturbances. The police are urging parents to ensure their children follow the curfew, highlighting the need for community cooperation to avoid similar incidents in the future.
