Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Zelenskiy calls for U.S.-EU unity to stop Putin, urging joint efforts for Ukraine’s peace and security, while the EU reaffirms support and explores post-war guarantees.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who arrived at a summit of European Union leaders in Brussels expressed that unity between the European Union and the United States was necessary to bring peace to Ukraine. “For us, it’s very significant, especially from the very start of next year, we need very much unity between the United States and European Union and nations of Europe,” Zelenskiy stated.
Zelenskiy insisted Donald Trump partner with Europe to stop Russia and protect his country amid worries the NATO sceptic U.S. President-elect could negotiate a setback to Kyiv by slashing American aid for its war effort. “We need this unity to achieve peace. I think only together the United States and Europe can stop Putin and save Ukraine,” Zelenskiy said.
As reported by Reuters, European Union diplomats have expressed the leader’s aim to send a clear sign to Trump regarding their continued support for Ukraine and will emphasise that any peace compromise must involve Ukraine and respect its territorial integrity.
European Union bosses are due to reaffirm their “unwavering commitment” to helping Ukraine “for as long as it takes”, according to draft summit conclusions. Zelenskiy’s arrival at the EU summit follows discussions with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and other European leaders, seeking to get immediate help to support Kyiv’s war effort and examine longer-term security guarantees.
While European heads insist they are concentrating on Ukraine’s immediate needs, some officials have begun examining how to assure the country’s safety after the war comes to a standstill. The EU leaders will also examine wider EU-U.S. ties over lunch amid worries of a potential transatlantic trade war.
