Kyiv (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced he will head to Washington for a meeting with US President Donald Trump on Monday, as the Ukrainian president talked with his US counterpart for more than an hour after the Trump-Putin talks in Alaska.

US President Donald Trump departed from Alaska without reaching an agreement to resolve the Ukraine conflict after a high-stakes meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. “There’s no deal until there’s a deal,” Trump told the world’s media following the session, saying that “great progress” was made but “we didn’t get there”.

During his return flight to Washington, Trump spoke with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky. European leaders also participated in the call.

What did Trump and Zelensky discuss during the call?

“Ukraine reaffirms its readiness to work with maximum effort to achieve peace,”

Zelensky wrote on X.

“President Trump informed about his meeting with the Russian leader and the main points of their discussion. It is important that America’s strength has an impact on the development of the situation.”

“We support President Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the USA, and Russia. Ukraine emphasizes that key issues can be discussed at the level of leaders, and a trilateral format is suitable for this,”

Zelensky said.

“On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, D.C., to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war. I am grateful for the invitation.”

Why does Zelensky stress European involvement in peace efforts?

“It is important that Europeans are involved at every stage to ensure reliable security guarantees together with America,”

He stated.

“We also discussed positive signals from the American side regarding participation in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security. We continue to coordinate our positions with all partners. I thank everyone who is helping.”

Following the Alaska summit, European leaders also participated in a discussion with US President Donald Trump, which lasted more than an hour.

The call involved French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and Polish President Karol Nawrocki. NATO chief Mark Rutte and the EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen also participated in the discussion.

When was the last time Trump and Zelensky met?

U.S. President Donald Trump last met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on February 28, 2025, during a combative bilateral meeting at the Oval Office at the White House, which was publicly broadcast.

The meeting was focused on U.S. support for Ukraine in the midst of the ongoing Russian invasion, but the meeting was cut short without a clear resolution. During the meeting, Trump, along with his then Vice President JD Vance, criticised Zelenskyy several times, and at one point, time was perceived to be confrontational.
