Washington (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – On Monday, President Trump and Russian President Vladimir V. Putin are expected to discuss the war in Ukraine during a much-anticipated telephone call, which occurs amidst a surge of diplomatic efforts to resolve the three-year-old conflict.
The US president announced that the call would occur at 10 a.m. Eastern, marking the second publicly recognized phone conversation between the two leaders since the US president began his second term. He stated that after speaking with Mr. Putin on Monday, he would talk to President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine and his European allies.
The first call, held in February, was hailed in Russia as evidence of a declining Western commitment to isolate and penalize Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
“Hopefully, it will be a productive day, a ceasefire will take place, and this very violent war, a war that should have never happened, will end,”
Mr. Trump stated.
How does Putin view Trump’s diplomatic outreach?
Mr. Putin’s spokesman, Dmitri S. Peskov, confirmed the planned call and said that the Kremlin is grateful for U.S. diplomatic efforts.
“If the political services of the U.S. — which we highly value and are grateful to the American side — if they actually help us reach our goals with peaceful means, that would indeed be preferable,”
Mr. Peskov stated to Russian state media on Monday about the continuation of the war.
How significant was the last call between Putin and Trump?
The first publicly acknowledged telephone conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin since Trump entered his second term occurred in February 2025.
The telephone conversation was important because it came as diplomatic efforts mounted to meet the ongoing war in Ukraine, which commenced with Russia’s all-out invasion in February 2022.
The main subject of discussion was the war in Ukraine, with both leaders discussing the potential for a ceasefire and a negotiated settlement to the war. Both sides presented their conversation as a potential turning point, with Trump insisting on his belief that direct conversation between him and Putin was necessary in order to move toward peace.
