Cairo (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – In a telephone conversation, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and new U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to ratify the Gaza ceasefire deal, the Egyptian presidency has said.

According to the statement from the Egyptian presidency, there was a very productive discussion indicating that full implementation of both the first and the second phase of the agreement in regards to the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas needs to be ensured; speedup shipment of humanitarian aids into Gaza must be assured also.

In their conversation, Sisi and Trump also voiced their keenness to attain peace and stability in the region, the Egyptian presidency statement said. Egypt’s President invited Trump to visit Egypt as soon as possible to examine problems in the Middle East, the statement added. The two presidents also examined the need to maintain their economic and investment ties, it stated.

What is the history of Trump and Sisi’s relationship?

Trump had a meeting for the first time with Sisi when he attended the United Nations General Assembly in 2016, when he discussed bilateral security cooperation and, more importantly, Egypt’s stabilizing role in the region. He complimented Sisi on efforts made to combat terrorism and emphasized the need to fortify this cooperation.

Sisi paid a number of visits to the White House under Trump. In April 2019, Trump hosted Sisi for the second time and expressed that US-Egypt ties were never as good as they are now. He praised Sisi’s governance, although concerns persist over abuses in Egypt on human rights.

He’s doing a great job,

Trump said, adding,

That’s a great person.
