Berlin (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Former German President Horst Koehler, a global policymaker with a special passion for Africa, died on February 01, 2025, after a brief illness, the federal presidential office announced in a statement.

Koehler was born in 1943 in German-occupied Poland; he spent most of his early life in refugee camps, that being so, with his parents, making his abode Ludwigsburg, Baden-Wuerttemberg.

A trained economist and fellow of the Christian Democrats, Koehler climbed to the position of deputy finance minister under ex-Chancellor Helmut Kohl, recreating a pivotal position in bringing the West German mark to East Germany after the communist regime collapsed in 1990.

Koehler was appointed managing director of the International Monetary Fund in 2000, a position he held for four years before being appointed president in 2004. Koehler resigned in May 2010 after facing criticism for remarks made during an interview about the necessity of military deployments to protect trade routes, which many interpreted as controversial.

How are EU leaders reacting to his passing?

The current President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, expressed that Koehler was a “highly esteemed and extremely popular person” who made significant contributions to Germany and the world. He highlighted Koehler’s approachability, optimism, and belief in Germany’s strength.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen paid tribute to Koehler in a post on X,

Horst Köhler dedicated his life to Germany and Europe. His lifelong tireless commitment towards the well-being of all people was exemplary. He was the true European and his legacy lives on. Sincere condolence to his family.

Furthermore, Roberta Metsola, the European Parliament President posted on X.

Deeply saddened by the death of former Federal President Horst Köhler. A strong voice for reason and for a strong Germany in a united Europe. All my condolences go to his family and the people of Germany.
