Sint-Niklaas (Brussels Morning Newspaper): On April 7, 2024, police in Sint-Niklaas arrested a 28-year-old man after he was found on top of a victim with bite marks. The man was sentenced to three years in prison for attempted assault, losing his rights for five years due to the attack.

On April 7, 2024, police in Sint-Niklaas responded to a call from a neighbor who heard screaming from an apartment. When they arrived, they found a 28-year-old man acting very strangely and sitting on top of a victim. The man seemed out of control and didn’t respond to the officers’ attempts to calm him down.

What led to the assault and the man’s sentencing in the recent violent incident?

The police quickly arrested the man because he was a serious threat to his victim. They started an investigation to find out what caused the man’s violent behavior and his mental state.

The victim had bite marks on her body, and the investigation showed that the man tried to assault her with a bottle, according to the prosecutor, who asked for a three-year prison sentence. The man denied the claims, saying she attacked him first and he only bit her in self-defense. His lawyer mentioned his low IQ of 71 and difficult family situation. The judge agreed with the prosecutor and sentenced him to three years in prison, stating that the evidence was clear. Besides the prison time, he will also lose his rights for five years.
