Kyiv (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Russia carried out an overnight assault on Ukraine, deploying a barrage of drones and missiles that resulted in at least one death and multiple fires in Kyiv, according to city officials.

The development came after Russian spokesperson Dmitry Peskov claimed Russian President Vladimir Putin was open to peace with Kyiv. Speaking after Donald Trump presented Moscow with a 50-day deadline to conclude its invasion, Peskov stated Russia had not given up on its strategic objectives.

What areas of Kyiv were hit in the strike?

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated rescuers and medics were operating on sites across four districts of the capital. A subway station in central Kyiv, commercial property, shops, houses, and a kindergarten were damaged, city officials revealed.

“Unfortunately, we have information about one person who died as a result of the attack,”

The head of Kyiv’s military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, stated on Telegram.

During another tense and sleepless night for Kyiv residents, many hurried to seek shelter in underground stations. Explosions echoed throughout the city as air defense units fought to repel the attack.

Oleh Synehubov, the governor of the Kharkiv region, reported several explosions in the country’s second-largest city but did not provide immediate details about the damage.

What did Zelenskyy propose regarding new peace talks?

Ukraine has suggested resuming peace talks with Russia next week following a halt last month. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Saturday that Defence Council secretary Rustem Umerov extended an invitation for a meeting with Russian negotiators.

Zelenskyy stressed the urgency of speeding up negotiations to eventually achieve a ceasefire and called on the Russian side to stop ducking pivotal decisions. He noted that all options should be pursued to accomplish a ceasefire and stated again, if necessary, that Ukraine remains open to high-level leadership discussions.

What damage did the earlier missile attack cause in Kyiv?

Previously, through the course of the night of July 10-11, 2025, Russia launched another extensive assault using a heavy saturation of drones and ballistic missiles to attack Kyiv and other areas of Ukraine, in one of the most massive air attacks, spanning several hours. At least two people were killed and 28 others were injured in Kyiv during the attack.

During the night, explosions and the sound of many dozens of Shahed-type drones were heard overhead in the Pechersk district and other areas. Russia fired substantial amounts of drones and missiles against Ukraine, including over Kyiv. Most—but not all— of the drones and missiles fired were intercepted by Ukrainian air defense.
