Moscow (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump could get together as early as this month. However, a face-to-face gathering will take time to schedule, according to Russian news agencies.
Russian spokesman stated the U.S.-Russia discussions held in Saudi Arabia were a
“very, very important step”
towards settling on the Ukraine fighting, nearing its third year.
“In order to carry out, figuratively speaking, resuscitation measures, diplomats will now begin to work in light of the agreement (Russian Foreign Minister Sergei) Lavrov reached yesterday with (U.S. Secretary of State Marco) Rubio,”
State media quoted Peskov as stating.
“But this is the first step…Naturally, it’s impossible to fix everything in one day or a week. There is a long way to go,”
He also said.
The negotiations in Riyadh were the first time U.S. and Russian officeholders met to examine ways to end the deadliest battle in Europe since World War Two. No Ukrainian or European officials were given an invitation. Ukraine has stated it will not accept any deal set without its consent.
What does Trump say about meeting Putin?
A day earlier, United States President Donald Trump stated he would “probably” meet his Russian counterpart this month while undertaking a broadside effectively blaming Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of being accused of Moscow’s attack.
As he spoke to reporters after US and Russian officials met for their first round of discussions in Saudi Arabia, Trump disregarded complaints that Kyiv had been refused a seat at talks to bring a halt to Russia’s fighting in Ukraine.
“I think I have the power to end this war, and I think it’s going very well. But today, I heard, ‘Oh, well, we weren’t invited.’ Well, you’ve been there for three years. You should have ended it…,”
Trump stated at a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.
“You should have never started it. You could have made a deal. I could have made a deal for Ukraine.”
He further said that he was “much more confident” of reaching an understanding following the discussions in Riyadh led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
