Antwerp (The Brussels morning newspaper): Café Recupel is a traveling café in Belgium where people can recycle old electronics while enjoying coffee. This week, it hosts events in Deurne, Zurenborg, and Berchem to promote recycling awareness and sustainability.

Recupel is a Belgian group that collects and recycles old electrical devices and lamps. They found that many homes have about 10 unused gadgets. To help, they started Café Recupel, a traveling café that visits different places in Belgium. People can bring their old items to recycle, enjoy coffee, and learn about the importance of recycling. The goal is to raise awareness about how unused electronics can harm the environment and make recycling easier and more enjoyable.

What events are happening at Café Recupel in Antwerp this week?

In the first week of September 2024, Café Recupel is having a special event at three different places in the city. On 4th September Wednesday, it was at Wim Saerensplein in Deurne, was open all day to get the community involved in recycling and sustainability activities. People can stop by to learn how to dispose of electrical appliances responsibly and find out about other eco-friendly programs. On 6th September Friday, Café Recupel will move to Dageraadplaats in Zurenborg, a lively area known for its busy atmosphere. The event will keep promoting environmental awareness and offer fun activities related to recycling. The week will wrap up on 7th September Saturday at Frans Jochems Plein in Berchem, giving residents one last chance to join the pop-up and support sustainability efforts in their neighborhood.

The campaign wants to fix old devices so they can be used again or to get materials from them. Karo Van Moorhem from Recupel says, “When people come here, we first check if the device works. If it does, we give it to local thrift shops.”He mentioned that you can bring old devices and get broken ones checked or fixed for free at the ‘Repair Corner.’ If they can be fixed right away, you can take them home. If not, you can still go to the thrift shops. If someone can’t go there, they can use the Recupel cargo bike. A bike courier helps those who ask for it. People in Deurne are happy about this. One woman said, “I brought an iron and a lamp. It’s easier because it’s close. I’ll bring my computer later, it was too heavy.”
